The Walden Galleria shopping day from Toronto

The Walden Galleria is the big indoor mall in Cheektowaga, on the east side of Buffalo, and for decades it has been the place Toronto shoppers go when they cross the border to shop. Its own site describes over 200 stores, with Macy's and JCPenney as anchors and a long list of restaurants. A shopping day from Toronto to the Walden Galleria works best with a car that waits: you shop, the chauffeur keeps the bags in the trunk between drops, and nobody has to drive home tired on the QEW at 8 pm. TorontoBlackCarService.net books the Walden Galleria day by the hour from your door anywhere in Toronto or the GTA, with a chauffeur who crosses at the Peace Bridge every week and knows how the return through Canadian customs works with a full trunk.

This page covers the route, the hours, which car to choose, what the day costs and - the part that matters most for a shopping trip - the personal exemptions Canadians get when they come home, which depend on how long you were away.

How far is the Walden Galleria from Toronto?

From Union Station the route is the Gardiner and the QEW to Fort Erie, the Peace Bridge into Buffalo, then the I-190 and a short run on the I-90 Thruway to the mall, which sits beside the Thruway in Cheektowaga. It is about 172 km (107 miles) and roughly 2 hours 7 minutes of driving with clear roads, before the border. Allow two and a half to three hours on a Saturday morning, when Ontario shoppers and the weekend trucks share the bridge. The mall's address is 1 Walden Galleria, Buffalo, NY 14225, per the Walden Galleria.

The Peace Bridge is the obvious crossing because it lands you straight onto the I-190. When it backs up, the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge off Highway 405 is the fallback - it adds distance down Grand Island but can save time on a bad morning. The chauffeur checks the CBP wait times going out and the CBSA wait times coming home, and chooses.

Walden Galleria hours

The Walden Galleria lists its regular hours as Monday to Thursday 10 am to 8 pm, Friday and Saturday 10 am to 9 pm, and Sunday 11 am to 6 pm, with individual store hours varying. Holiday hours change around Thanksgiving, Black Friday and December, so check the mall's site the week before. For a Saturday trip, a 7:30 am pickup in Toronto puts you at the doors around opening time even with a moderate border queue; for a Sunday trip, leave later because the mall opens at 11.

The Walden Galleria is about 172 km (107 miles) from downtown Toronto - roughly 2 hours 7 minutes of driving via the QEW and the Peace Bridge, plus border time. A chauffeured shopping day of about 9 hours costs $1,215-$1,440 in an Executive Sedan or $1,575-$1,890 in a Business SUV, before HST and gratuity.

Duty-free allowances for Canadians coming home

This is the arithmetic every cross-border shopper should do before the first purchase, and it is set by how long you were out of Canada, not by how much you spent. According to the Government of Canada's personal exemptions guide, which the CBSA points returning residents to:

Time out of CanadaPersonal exemptionConditions
Less than 24 hoursNoneDuty and taxes apply to what you bring back
24 hours or moreUp to CAN$200Goods with you; no alcohol or tobacco; if the total is over $200 you cannot claim it at all
48 hours or moreUp to CAN$800Goods with you; alcohol and tobacco within limits
7 days or moreUp to CAN$800Alcohol and tobacco must be with you; other goods can follow

Three practical consequences. First, a same-day shopping trip has no exemption: everything you buy is declared and duty and taxes are assessed on it. People still find the day worthwhile for items that are cheaper or simply unavailable at home, but go in knowing it. Second, the 24-hour exemption has a trap: if your goods add up to more than $200, you lose the whole exemption rather than paying on the excess. Third, the 48-hour exemption of $800 is generous enough that an overnight or a weekend in Buffalo can change the numbers entirely. For alcohol at 48 hours or more, the limit is 1.5 litres of wine, or 1.14 litres of alcoholic beverages, or 8.5 litres of beer - one of the three, not all three.

Declare everything honestly and keep the receipts together in one place; the chauffeur hands over the passports and the vehicle documents, and the passengers answer the officer's questions about what they bought. Detailed CBSA rules are on the CBSA personal goods page.

A Saturday at the Galleria, hour by hour

7:30 am - pickup at your door anywhere in the GTA; coffee in the cup holders, the QEW still quiet. 9:15 am - the Peace Bridge, passports handed over by the chauffeur, the officer's questions answered by you. 10:00 am - the doors open and you are dropped at the entrance you choose. 1:00 pm - lunch in the mall or a short hop to a restaurant nearby; the first round of bags goes into the trunk. 3:30 pm - a second stop if you want one, a big-box store or the outlets on the way home. 5:00 pm - the return crossing, receipts in one bag, the declaration made by each passenger. 7:00 pm - home, with the trunk unloaded at your door. That is about 11 and a half hours with the extra stop, or about 9 without it.

When another option is better

Be honest with yourself about the trip. If you are one person buying one thing, driving your own car or ordering online may cost far less than any chauffeured day. The chauffeured day pays off for a group - three to six in an SUV or up to twelve in a Sprinter share one hourly rate - for a family visiting from overseas who do not want to drive on unfamiliar roads, for anyone combining shopping with a game, the Falls or a flight, and for the shopper who wants the day without the drive home. If your numbers do not work, the desk will tell you so.

Make it a weekend: the overnight option

Because the $800 exemption starts at 48 hours, some clients turn the Galleria into a two-night Buffalo weekend: shopping on Friday, a Bills game or Niagara Falls on Saturday, more shopping Sunday morning and home. That can be booked two ways. Two one-way flat fares - the car drops you on Friday and a car collects you on Sunday - are quoted in the engine and are usually the better value. Or the chauffeur stays with you for the weekend, with an overnight arrangement set out on the confirmation; that is on request and suits a family or a client who wants the same car at the hotel door each morning. Our travel desk books the hotel through BookingWorldwide.net.

Practical tips for the day

Make a list before you leave and agree a budget against your exemption, so nobody is surprised at the booth. Keep every receipt, and keep them together - a single envelope in one person's bag is easier than six wallets at the CBSA window. Remove purchases from shopping bags only if you need the space; officers sometimes ask to see items, and tags and receipts make that quick. Carry a card that works in US dollars, and check your bank's foreign transaction fees before the day. Leave the trunk to the chauffeur between stops - it is locked while you shop - and tell them if anything fragile or cold needs care. Finally, if you plan to buy something large, mention it at booking so the right vehicle is sent; a Business SUV or a Sprinter handles a television box that a sedan will not.

Which vehicle for a shopping day

Executive Sedan for one or two shoppers with moderate bags. Business SUV (Yukon or Suburban) for three to six, or for anyone planning a serious haul - the cargo space behind the third row is the reason most shopping days are booked in an SUV. First Class SUV (Escalade) when the day is a treat. Executive Sprinter for a group of friends, a bridal party or a family reunion of up to twelve, with a rear luggage bay for the bags. The fleet page shows each vehicle's luggage space and seats, and the shopping and errands page covers how a shopping booking works in general.

A sedan has a three-hour minimum and a Sprinter five, but a Galleria day is longer than either. Sealed purchases - including any sealed alcohol you are bringing home within your allowance - ride in the trunk; nothing is opened or consumed on board.

What a Walden Galleria day costs

A typical Walden Galleria day is about 9 hours from your door and back: two-plus hours each way with the bridge, and four to five hours in the mall. Engine quotes from 8 October 2026, before 13% HST and gratuity:

VehicleHourly rateAbout 9 hours
Executive Sedan$135-$160$1,215-$1,440
Business SUV (Yukon/Suburban)$175-$210$1,575-$1,890
First Class SUV (Escalade)$225-$270$2,025-$2,430
Executive Sprinter (12)$475-$570$4,275-$5,130

Add a stop - a second mall, a Target run, dinner in Buffalo - and the clock simply continues at the same rate to the next full hour. Tolls are shown at booking. The exact total shows in the booker before you confirm. For a group of four in a Business SUV, the 9-hour day works out to roughly $395-$475 each before tax and tip. The rates page has the full hourly table.

Combine the Galleria with other stops

The Galleria sits near the Thruway, so it pairs easily with other trips across the river. The Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA is on the way back via the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge for outlet shoppers who want both in one day. Buffalo Niagara International Airport is close to the mall, so a flight drop-off can start with a few hours of shopping. A Bills game at Highmark Stadium and the American side of Niagara Falls make the weekend version. The Buffalo day-trip page has more ideas.

Border documents

Canadian citizens 16 and over need a valid passport or a trusted traveller card such as NEXUS (Ontario stopped issuing enhanced driver's licences in 2019, so for Torontonians it is a passport or NEXUS) at the land border, according to US Customs and Border Protection; children under 16 need a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship. A child travelling without both parents should carry a consent letter. The NEXUS lane can be used only when every passenger in the car holds NEXUS. Put each passenger's name and citizenship in the booking notes.

Or call (833) 931-6688, 24/7, or message us on WhatsApp. Booking direct means the person you talk to plans the car, the crossing and the timing - not a marketplace. More cross-border options are on the USA hub and the cross-border USA service page; longer drives anywhere are on city-to-city car service.

Count the hours before you count the dollars. Under 24 hours there is no exemption; at 24 hours it is $200 but only if the total stays under $200; at 48 hours it is $800. Decide the length of the trip first, then shop to it.

How hourly works

Four rules. No small print.

The hourly minimums are the ones printed in our terms; the rate for each class is quoted live by the reservation engine for your date. The rates page explains what moves it.

  • 3hExecutive Sedan, Luxury Sedan, SUV
  • 3hStretch Limousine, Economy Van

3-hour minimum

Sedans and SUVs book from three hours; Sprinters and coaches from five. After the minimum, time is billed by the hour.

Hourly time starts at the pickup address, not at our garage. Garage travel, where it applies, is shown at booking in 30-minute blocks - never a surprise on the invoice.

Overtime rounds to the hour

Run past the reserved block and the extra time is billed to the next full hour at the same rate, with tax and gratuity as on the original booking.

Waiting is included

Hourly means the car waits. The meeting that runs long, the dinner that runs late, the second stop you did not plan - the chauffeur is outside, the clock simply continues.

Seventeen areas. One hourly rate.

The clock starts at your door whether that door is on Bay Street, in Yorkville, in Oakville or in Newmarket. Pick the area for the local detail - garage time, venues, the roads that matter.
