The shopping day, solved

The problem with a shopping day in Toronto is not the shopping; it is the carrying and the parking. Holt Renfrew's bags do not belong in an outlet mall, Yorkdale's garage is a forty-minute exercise on a Saturday, Vaughan Mills is a twenty-minute walk from the car, and nobody who has just bought a coat wants to stand on Bloor Street waiting for a pin to arrive. A shopping chauffeur removes all of it: the car is at the door of each store, the bags go into the boot and stay there, the chauffeur waits, and the day moves from Yorkville to Yorkdale to the outlets without anyone touching a parking machine.

It is an hourly booking - three hours minimum for a sedan or SUV, four to six for a proper day - and the Luxury SUV is the usual car because the day ends with more than it started with. The full-day page covers the ten-hour version; this page is about the shopping itself.

Where Toronto shops, and where the car waits

Bloor-Yorkville. The Mink Mile from Avenue Road to Yonge - Holt Renfrew, Harry Rosen, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Prada, Tiffany - and the Yorkville Avenue and Hazelton Avenue boutiques behind it. The car waits on Bellair, on Hazelton or on Cumberland depending on the store; Bloor itself is a no-stopping street at most hours and the chauffeur knows exactly where the three-minute exceptions are. The Yorkville area page has the local detail.

Yorkdale. The largest luxury concentration outside downtown - Holt Renfrew, Nordstrom, Apple, Tesla, Gucci, Burberry, the LV and Chanel boutiques. The valet entrance by Holt's on the south side is where the chauffeur drops and collects; the garage is not where you want to be. Fifteen minutes from Yorkville up the Allen.

The Eaton Centre and Queen Street. Downtown's mall and the independents west of it. The car waits on Queen at Yonge for a minute, or on Bay by the Marriott entrance for longer; Dundas Square is not a place to stop. Queen West and Ossington for the independents; King East for design and furniture, where the boot matters most.

Vaughan Mills. The 200-store outlet mall at the 400 and Rutherford - Bass Pro, the Nike and Adidas outlets, Holt Renfrew Last Call, the Disney store for the grandchildren. The chauffeur uses the entrance nearest the stores on the list rather than the one nearest the road; the Vaughan area page explains the roads.

Toronto Premium Outlets, Halton Hills. The luxury outlet - Burberry, Coach, Kate Spade, Polo, Tory Burch, Michael Kors - at the 401 and Trafalgar, forty minutes from downtown. The car waits at the ring road; the day is usually paired with lunch in Oakville or Milton.

Sherway Gardens. Etobicoke's luxury mall at the 427 and the QEW - Holt Renfrew, Saks, Nordstrom - fifteen minutes from downtown and ten from Pearson, which makes it the shopping stop on the way to a flight. The Etobicoke area page has it.

Bayview Village and the Shops at Don Mills for North York; Square One for Mississauga; Upper Canada Mall for Newmarket; CF Markville for Markham. Each area page says where the car waits.

The shopping days people book

The Yorkville-Yorkdale half-day. Rosedale at 10, Bloor Street until noon, Yorkdale until 2, home. Four hours, SUV. The outlet day. Downtown at 9:30, Toronto Premium Outlets by 10:15, lunch in Oakville, Sherway on the way back, home by 4. Six hours. The visitor's day. A guest from out of town who wants Yorkville, the Eaton Centre and the St. Lawrence Market in one day with lunch, and a chauffeur who can say where the good coffee is. Six hours. The wedding shopping day. The bride, her mother and two friends: the dress salon on Avenue Road, shoes in Yorkville, lunch, the tailor on Spadina, the florist. The SUV. The holiday run. The December Saturday when everything must be bought in one day and the parking lots are full; the car is the only calm part of it. The relocation day. A family newly arrived furnishing a house: King East, Castlefield Avenue's design district, IKEA in Etobicoke, the boot full and the chauffeur helping carry.

A shopping chauffeur in Toronto is an hourly booking, usually four to six hours in a Luxury SUV, covering Bloor-Yorkville, Yorkdale, the Eaton Centre, Vaughan Mills, Toronto Premium Outlets and Sherway on one booking. The car waits at each store's practical entrance, the bags stay in the boot between stops, and the day is billed at a flat hourly rate.

The right car for shopping

The Luxury SUV - Escalade, Navigator or similar - because the cargo bay takes a day of bags without anything riding on a seat, the rear seats fold for a lamp or a mirror, and the ride height makes getting in and out with parcels easy. The Executive Sedan for a short Yorkville run with two people and small bags. The Mercedes S-Class for the client who wants to arrive at Holt's in it. The Executive Sprinter for a bridal party or a group of six to twelve doing the outlets together, from five hours. The fleet page has capacities.

What the chauffeur does

Drops at the door, not the garage. Takes the bags from you at each exit and stows them so the boot stays organised. Keeps a coat in the car in January and the car cool in July. Knows that Holt Renfrew on Bloor has a Bellair Street side door, that Yorkdale's valet is by the south Holt's entrance, that the outlets' ring road has a lay-by at the food court. Waits without being asked to. Texts if a store is closing so the last stop can move. Carries everything to the door at the end. None of it is on the invoice.

Personal shopping and the stores' own services

Most luxury houses in Yorkville and at Yorkdale offer appointment shopping and will hold a fitting room; the chauffeur can call ahead if you give the store and the time. Holt Renfrew's and Nordstrom's personal shoppers work by appointment, and a chauffeur who arrives at the right entrance at the right minute is part of making the appointment run. For a visitor, the Toronto Region Board of Trade's retail data and the City of Toronto's BIA maps are the honest guide to which streets are worth the time; the chauffeur's opinion is also available.

What it costs

The class hourly rate for the date, times the hours, plus HST and gratuity; nothing else unless you choose the 407 to reach Vaughan Mills faster (the chauffeur will ask) or a mall charges for parking, which downtown lots do and the suburban malls do not. The rates page explains the number. Against a day of ride-app trips with bags in the back of a stranger's car and a wait outside every mall, the hourly SUV is the cheaper day by the third stop and the only sane one by the fourth; the comparison page works it through.

Shopping days out of the city

The Niagara-on-the-Lake shops and the outlet collection at Niagara, the antiques in Port Hope and Cobourg, the St. Jacobs farmers' market and outlets near Waterloo, the Collingwood and Blue Mountain village shops: all are shopping days that the day-trip board prices with the drive included. Cross-border, the Walden Galleria and the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls in Buffalo are on the Buffalo page, with the customs notes.

Booking it

Choose By the hour, the SUV, the start address, the date and time, and four to six hours. List the stores in the notes and the dispatcher orders them sensibly - Yorkville before Yorkdale before the outlets, because the 401 west is better at 1 than at 4 - and assigns a chauffeur who knows the entrances. Corporate clients book it on account for a visiting guest; the corporate accounts page explains.

A December Saturday, timed

9:30 Forest Hill pickup, Luxury SUV. 9:50 Yorkdale, valet entrance; two hours, the bags to the car twice. 12:00 the Allen and the 401 west to Sherway; 12:20 Sherway, lunch at the food hall, Holt's and Saks. 2:15 the QEW to the Gardiner to Yorkville; 2:45 Bloor Street, the car on Bellair; Tiffany, Harry Rosen, a final stop at Whole Foods on Avenue Road for the dinner. 4:30 home, the chauffeur carrying eleven bags to the door. Seven hours used; seven billed; no parking machine touched.

Errands, not just shopping

The same booking covers the day of errands nobody enjoys: the passport office at 25 St. Clair East with its queue, the bank on King, the tailor on Spadina, the dry cleaner, the framer on Dupont, the vet in Leaside, the LCBO on Queens Quay for the case of wine, the return to Canadian Tire. A three-hour sedan block with the chauffeur waiting outside each and the boot filling up turns a wasted Saturday into a morning. Corporate assistants book it for a visiting executive's partner; families book it for a parent who no longer drives; the personal chauffeur page turns it into a weekly arrangement.

The chauffeur's opinion, offered once

A Toronto chauffeur has driven to every mall on this page hundreds of times and has an opinion: that Yorkdale before 11 on a Saturday is civilised and after 1 is not; that the outlets in Halton Hills are best on a weekday morning and worst on a holiday Monday; that Vaughan Mills on a Sunday afternoon is a parking lot and the 400 to reach it is another; that Bloor Street is quietest at 10 and Yorkville Avenue busiest at 3. The opinion is offered once, if asked, and the day is then yours.

The bags are insured, the car is locked, the chauffeur stays with it. Nothing is left in an unattended vehicle; on an hourly booking the chauffeur is with the car whenever you are not. If you would rather the bags went home mid-day - the coat before the outlets - the chauffeur can drop them and return, on the same clock.

FAQ

Shopping & errands chauffeur: questions answered

How many hours should I book for a shopping day?

Four for Yorkville and Yorkdale; six for the outlets with lunch; a full ten for a visitor's day that adds the Eaton Centre and the market. Three is the minimum for a sedan or SUV. Overtime rounds to the next hour at the same rate.

Which car is best for shopping?

The Luxury SUV - the cargo bay takes a day of bags, the seats fold for a lamp or a mirror, and the ride height is easy with parcels. A sedan suits a short Yorkville run; a Sprinter suits a group doing the outlets together.

Where does the chauffeur wait at Yorkdale and Vaughan Mills?

Yorkdale: the valet entrance by the south Holt Renfrew door. Vaughan Mills: the entrance nearest the stores on your list. Toronto Premium Outlets: the ring-road lay-by by the food court. Never the garage.

Can the bags stay in the car between stores?

Yes - that is the point. The chauffeur stows them in the boot at each exit and stays with the locked car whenever you are not in it. Mid-day drops home are possible on the same clock.

Can the chauffeur wait while I shop?

Yes. Waiting is included in the hourly rate; the clock simply runs. There is no separate waiting charge on an hourly booking.

Do you charge for parking at the malls?

Suburban malls - Yorkdale, Vaughan Mills, the outlets, Sherway - do not charge, and the chauffeur uses the drop-off entrances anyway. Downtown lots that charge are shown at booking; the 407 is used only if you choose it.

Can I book a shopping chauffeur for a visitor?

Yes. Book it in your name with the guest's name and phone in the notes; the chauffeur meets them at the hotel by name and follows the list. Corporate clients do this for visiting principals' partners.

Can we shop in Niagara or Buffalo on the same booking?

Yes, as a day trip. The Niagara outlets and shops are on the Niagara pages; Buffalo's Walden Galleria and the Fashion Outlets are on the Buffalo page with the customs notes. The car goes out and comes home on one booking.

3-hour minimum

Sedans and SUVs book from three hours; Sprinters and coaches from five. After the minimum, time is billed by the hour.

The clock runs from your door

Hourly time starts at the pickup address, not at our garage. Garage travel, where it applies, is shown at booking in 30-minute blocks - never a surprise on the invoice.

Overtime rounds to the hour

Run past the reserved block and the extra time is billed to the next full hour at the same rate, with tax and gratuity as on the original booking.

Waiting is included

Hourly means the car waits. The meeting that runs long, the dinner that runs late, the second stop you did not plan - the chauffeur is outside, the clock simply continues.

Toronto & the GTA

Seventeen areas. One hourly rate.

The clock starts at your door whether that door is on Bay Street, in Yorkville, in Oakville or in Newmarket. Pick the area for the local detail - garage time, venues, the roads that matter.
