Toronto to Detroit airport without the rental car
The drive from Toronto to Detroit airport is a straight run west on the 401, one border crossing at Windsor and a short hop down the interstate to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport - DTW. It is 404 km (251 miles) from Union Station, and in a chauffeured car from TorontoBlackCarService.net it takes about four and a half to five hours of driving plus the time at the border. You sit in the back of a sedan, an SUV or a Sprinter; we handle the 401, the crossing, the terminal and the curb.
People book a car service from Toronto to Detroit airport for three reasons. A flight out of DTW to a US city sometimes prices or schedules better than the same trip from Pearson. A family or group with luggage would rather not leave a car in an airport lot in another country for a week. And a business traveller landing at DTW from overseas wants to be met and driven home to the GTA. This page covers the route, the three crossings, the two terminals, the documents and what the trip costs.
Toronto to Detroit airport (DTW) is 404 km (251 miles) from downtown Toronto - about four and a half to five hours plus the border, via the 401 and the Ambassador Bridge, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel or the Gordie Howe bridge. A one-way drive is a flat fare quoted in the engine; hourly sedans run $135-$160 an hour (8 October 2026 engine quotes, before 13% HST and gratuity).

The route from Toronto to DTW
From downtown the chauffeur takes the Gardiner or the 427 to the 401 and stays on it west past Milton, Cambridge, Woodstock and London, then on to Chatham and Windsor. In Windsor the 401 leads towards the Gordie Howe bridge, while the Ambassador Bridge and the tunnel are reached through the city. On the Michigan side DTW sits west of downtown Detroit off I-94, about 33 km and half an hour from the Ambassador Bridge in normal traffic. The 401 between London and Windsor is long and flat and is the stretch where winter weather matters; the dispatcher checks Ontario 511 before the car leaves.
Plan the departure from the flight backwards. Airlines generally ask you to be at the terminal well ahead of departure - allow at least two hours for a US flight; add the crossing, a comfort stop near London and a margin for the 401 through Mississauga, and a 2 pm flight means leaving downtown Toronto at around 6:30 am. The dispatcher will suggest the pickup time when you put the flight number in the booker.
Ambassador Bridge, tunnel or Gordie Howe
Windsor and Detroit now have three crossings, and the chauffeur chooses between them on the morning from the live CBP border wait times and the destination.
The Ambassador Bridge. The privately owned suspension bridge from Huron Church Road to the Detroit side, open 24 hours a day according to the Ambassador Bridge. It has been the default crossing for Toronto-to-Detroit drives for decades and links well to the interstates heading west towards the airport.
The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. Under the river from downtown Windsor to downtown Detroit, with its Detroit address on East Jefferson Avenue, operating 24 hours a day per the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. It is the natural choice when the trip includes a stop downtown on the way to the airport.
The Gordie Howe International Bridge. The newest crossing, joining the 401 in Windsor to I-75 in Detroit. Its operator announced that it would open to traffic on 27 July 2026, as posted on the Gordie Howe International Bridge site, and it is now part of the chauffeur's choice - the 401 runs straight to it, which makes it attractive for the airport run when its wait is short. Tolls on all three crossings are shown at booking.
A fourth option, the Blue Water Bridge at Sarnia and Port Huron, adds distance for an airport run but is worth knowing about when the Windsor crossings are backed up; the chauffeur will mention it if the boards say so.
McNamara Terminal or Evans Terminal
DTW has two terminals, and the airline decides which one you need. According to the airport's terminals page, the McNamara Terminal serves Delta, WestJet, Air France and Aeromexico, and the Evans Terminal serves Air Canada, American, United, Southwest, JetBlue, Alaska, Frontier, Avelo, Sun Country, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, Royal Jordanian and Volaris. Put the airline and flight number in the booker and the chauffeur drives to the right departures curb; if you are connecting to a partner airline, check your ticket for the operating carrier, because that is what decides the terminal.
Arriving at DTW and riding home to Toronto. For a pickup, the chauffeur waits in the area DTW sets aside for pre-arranged transportation and texts you the meeting point once your flight lands. The flight is tracked, so a delay moves the pickup without a phone call. Free waiting is 30 minutes after landing for a flight from inside North America and 45 minutes for an international arrival, and meet and greet with a name sign is an option in the booker.
Documents for the crossing
Every passenger needs an accepted document for the US border. Under US rules for land entry, Canadian citizens can present a valid passport or a NEXUS card, as set out by US Customs and Border Protection. Because you are flying onwards from DTW, bring the passport anyway - you will need it at the airport. Permanent residents of Canada need their own passport and PR card, and visitors need whatever their nationality requires for US entry, arranged before the day.
Children under 16 entering by land need proof of citizenship, but a child who is flying on from DTW needs the document the airline requires. A child travelling with one parent should carry a consent letter from the other; Global Affairs Canada publishes a template. The NEXUS lane is only available when every passenger in the car holds a NEXUS card - one passenger without it and the car uses the regular lane. Wait times are on the CBP board going in and on the CBSA board coming home.
What a Toronto to DTW drive costs
One way, Toronto to DTW (or DTW to Toronto). A flat fare, fixed by route and vehicle class, with the car's return built in. The engine quotes it before you confirm; we do not publish a single figure because the fare depends on the class and the date.
As a guide, the hourly equivalent. A there-and-back day of roughly 9 to 10 hours - drop at DTW and the car returns to Toronto, or the car meets an arrival and brings the passenger home - works out at these ranges using our hourly rates:
| Vehicle | Hourly rate | 9-10 h guide range |
|---|---|---|
| Executive Sedan (3) | $135-$160 | $1,215-$1,600 |
| Business SUV, Yukon or Suburban (6) | $175-$210 | $1,575-$2,100 |
| First Class SUV, Escalade (6) | $225-$270 | $2,025-$2,700 |
| Mercedes E/S-Class (3) | $350-$420 | $3,150-$4,200 |
| Executive Sprinter (12) | $475-$570 | $4,275-$5,700 |
All figures are engine quotes from 8 October 2026 in Canadian dollars, before 13% HST and gratuity; bridge or tunnel tolls are added at booking; the exact rate shows in the booker before you confirm. Compare that with a week of airport parking at DTW plus fuel and the drive yourself, or with a short connecting flight and the risk of missing the long-haul one, and the chauffeured run often makes sense for two or more travellers. The rates page explains how hourly pricing works.
Pearson or DTW: an honest comparison
For most trips, Pearson is the right airport - it is closer, it has more nonstop flights, and nothing beats a short drive to the terminal. DTW earns a look in a few situations: when a US connection from Pearson would mean a short hop and a tight transfer, when the schedule out of Detroit simply suits your destination better, or when a group of four or six would rather share one vehicle than each take a connecting flight. It also suits travellers in the west of the GTA - Mississauga, Oakville, Milton - because the car is on the 401 heading west within minutes. Compare the full door-to-door time and the total fare for everyone travelling before you decide. Our desk will run the numbers with you, and if Pearson is the better answer we will say so and book the Pearson airport limo instead.
At the border, step by step
The chauffeur pulls into the lane chosen from the wait boards and collects every passport before the booth. The officer asks the passengers - not the chauffeur - where you are going and for how long; for an airport run the honest answer is simply that you are flying out of Detroit Metro, with your flight details to hand. Keep answers short and accurate. Luggage may be inspected, so pack nothing you would not want to explain. After the booth it is about half an hour to the terminal in normal traffic.
Which vehicle for the airport run
Executive Sedan for one to three travellers with normal luggage. Business SUV (Yukon or Suburban) for a family of five or six with suitcases, and the vehicle we would pick for the 401 in January. Escalade for the same space with a more polished cabin. Mercedes E or S-Class for an executive who will work for five hours. Executive Sprinter for a team or a wedding party flying out together - twelve seats and a rear luggage bay, so nobody holds a bag on their lap. The fleet page has the details and the group Sprinter page covers larger parties.
Detroit, Windsor and the rest of the trip
If DTW is only part of the plan, the car can do more. A morning at The Henry Ford in Dearborn, about 20 km from the Ambassador Bridge, fits before an evening flight. A dinner in Windsor on the way home splits the drive. A game or a business day downtown is on the Detroit day-trip page. Flying from Ohio instead is on our Cleveland airport page, and the closer US airports - Buffalo Niagara (BUF) and Niagara Falls International (IAG) - are a third of the distance. The USA hub lists every cross-border destination we drive to, and the cross-border service page explains the crossing in general.
For a long trip with a hotel night in Detroit, the overnight is available on request: the chauffeur stays and the car is at the hotel door in the morning. A second chauffeur is also available on request for very long days. Flights and hotels themselves can be booked through our travel desk, run with BookingWorldwide.net.
How to book
Book direct in the reservation engine on this page: choose Route for a one-way to or from DTW, enter the pickup address and the airport, the date, the flight number and the vehicle, and confirm the fare you see. For an hourly day or an overnight, choose By the hour or call the desk on (833) 931-6688, 24/7. You can also message us on WhatsApp. Please book with us directly rather than through a third-party marketplace - it is the only way we can track your flight and match the chauffeur to a cross-border run.
Cancellation. More than 72 hours before the scheduled pickup, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show, 100%. Child seats and toddler seats are $25 each in the booker; wheelchair-accessible vehicles and pets are arranged with the desk ahead of time.
From our network: LWD article - cross-border handoffs · Limousine Association International - Canada · VWD - attractions in Canada · HotelsWorldwide.Directory - luxury hotels in Canada · BookingWorldwide.net - Toronto hotels, flights and activities.
Check the operating airline. Codeshares are the most common reason for a wrong terminal at DTW: a ticket sold by one airline but flown by another departs from the operating carrier's terminal. Put the flight number in the booker and we will check it with you the evening before.

LimousineWorldwide.Directory
Our listing in the worldwide directory is how a Toronto client who keeps a chauffeur by the hour here can do the same in Vancouver, London or Dubai through a vetted operator. Every Canadian city and every country on this site is served through that network.

LimousineAssociation.International
Membership commits us to the association's standards on licensing, commercial insurance, vehicle inspection and chauffeur conduct - the things a passenger cannot check from the back seat during a ten-hour day.

HotelsWorldwide.Directory
Our membership of the hotels directory links the car to the bed: concierges and hotel teams across the directory find a vetted Toronto chauffeur in one place, and our clients find the hotel at the far end of the drive - Yorkville, the airport strip, Niagara-on-the-Lake or Muskoka.
