Toronto to Buffalo airport, door to terminal

Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) is the US airport that Toronto quietly uses. A Toronto to Buffalo airport car service run starts at your door - a condo on Queens Quay, a house in Oakville, an office in North York - and ends at the departures curb on Genesee Street, 171 km (106 miles) later, with one border crossing in between. The drive itself is about 2 hours 15 minutes off-peak by the Gardiner, the QEW and Highway 405 to the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, then the I-190 and the I-290 to the airport. The border is the part no map can promise, and most of this page is about planning around it.

We already have a short guide to Hamilton and Buffalo airport car service that compares the two airports. This page goes further on Buffalo alone: what the airport itself says about Canadians flying from it, how we time the border against your flight, where the chauffeur meets you at the terminal, and how the return pickup works when you land back at BUF with a week of luggage. If you want the general rules for crossing in a chauffeured car, the cross-border page covers every bridge; if you are going to Buffalo for the day rather than a flight, the Buffalo day trip is the better read.

Why Canadians fly from Buffalo - in the airport's own words

The airport has a page written for Canadian travellers, and it is worth reading what it actually claims rather than what people repeat. When we read Buffalo Niagara's Canadian information page on 8 October 2026, it said:

  • Up to 100 nonstop flights a day to 30 destinations. The commercial carriers listed on the airport's site were American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Sun Country and United.
  • An average peak checkpoint wait of 12 minutes, compared with the three hours before departure that Pearson asks travellers to allow.
  • No additional airport stop for customs and immigration on flights to US destinations - you have already crossed the border in the car.
  • No international taxes or fees on flights to US airports, and parking rates it describes as low.
  • A ranking of 17th in the US for most affordable airfares (third quarter of 2024), and a sample Orlando trip for a family of four showing a saving of US$335.99, about 34%, against the same trip from Pearson. The airport notes its analysis was done in March 2025 and does not guarantee future savings.
  • Almost two million Canadians used its airports in the previous year.

Those are the airport's figures, not ours, and fares move every day. What they describe is real, though: a domestic US ticket from Buffalo is often much cheaper than a transborder ticket from Toronto, and a family multiplies the difference by every seat.

When Buffalo is the wrong airport

Honesty first, because the transfer costs money. Pearson has US preclearance, so a Toronto passenger clears US customs before boarding and lands as a domestic passenger. Flying from Buffalo, you clear the border in the car instead, and you add a long drive in each direction. For one person on a short business trip to New York or Chicago, Pearson or Billy Bishop usually wins once the transfer is counted; the Pearson airport limo page has those numbers. Buffalo wins for families and groups on leisure fares, for destinations Pearson serves badly, and for travellers who simply prefer a quiet terminal. Put the fare difference and the transfer quote side by side before you book either - the reservation engine shows the transfer price before you confirm.

A Toronto to Buffalo airport car service run is 171 km (106 miles) from Union Station, about 2 hours 15 minutes of driving plus the border, usually by the QEW, Highway 405 and the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. Plan the pickup backwards from your flight: the airline's check-in time, a border allowance of 30-90 minutes, then the drive. Every passenger needs a passport, NEXUS card or enhanced licence.

Timing the border for a flight

The single biggest mistake people make with a Buffalo airport limo is planning the trip forwards - leave at 7, arrive at 9:15 - instead of backwards from the flight. We plan it backwards, and so should you.

The pickup-time formula

Start with your departure time. Subtract the time your airline asks you to be at the airport for a domestic US flight. Subtract a border allowance. Subtract the drive. The result is the pickup time, and the dispatcher will usually round it earlier, not later.

StepTypical allowanceNotes
Drive, Union Station to BUF2 h 15171 km via Lewiston-Queenston; Peace Bridge route 176 km
Border, weekday morning30 minOften less; check the live boards
Border, Friday, weekend or holiday60-90 minLong weekends and school breaks are the worst
Airline check-in before departurePer your airlineDomestic US rules, not international
Pickup buffer we add15-30 minRain, snow, QEW collisions

A worked example: a 10:30 am Saturday departure to Florida, with the airline asking for 90 minutes. Ninety minutes before is 9:00 am at the terminal. Allow 75 minutes for a Saturday border and 2 hours 15 for the drive, and the car leaves downtown at about 5:30 am, which the dispatcher would make 5:15. From Mississauga or Oakville, the QEW is shorter and the pickup moves later; from Markham or Richmond Hill, earlier. The airport's own FAQ says the TSA checkpoint closes at 9:00 pm daily, which matters for an evening departure booked on the assumption that the security line runs late.

Which bridge, and who decides

The chauffeur decides on the morning, from the CBP wait-time board and the CBSA's. The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge off the 405 is the shortest route to BUF and the usual first choice. The Peace Bridge at Fort Erie is 4 km longer and the alternative when Lewiston is backed up. The Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls is a tourist crossing and rarely right for a flight. One detail from the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission: at Lewiston-Queenston, the dedicated NEXUS lane into the US runs only Monday to Friday, 6 to 8 am. A car where every passenger holds NEXUS, crossing on a weekday in that window, can use it; outside it, or with even one non-NEXUS passenger, the car uses the regular lanes.

Documents, so the booth is short

US Customs and Border Protection lists what Canadian citizens may present at a land crossing on its Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative page: a valid passport or a trusted traveller card such as NEXUS (Ontario stopped issuing enhanced driver's licences in 2019, so for Torontonians it is a passport or NEXUS). Children under 16 who are US or Canadian citizens need only proof of citizenship at the land border, but you are about to board a plane, so check your airline's rules and bring every passport. Permanent residents and other nationals need whatever their nationality requires for US entry, sorted before the day. A child travelling with one parent should carry the consent letter the Government of Canada recommends on travel.gc.ca. Put every passenger's name and nationality in the booking notes and the desk will flag a document problem while there is still time to fix it.

Terminal pickup and drop-off at BUF

BUF is one terminal on two levels: departures above, arrivals and baggage claim below. On the way out, the chauffeur drops you at the departures curb for your airline, unloads the bags and is gone in a couple of minutes - the airport tickets vehicles that are not actively loading or unloading. Commercial vehicles at Buffalo operate under the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's rules for ground transportation, which is one reason a properly insured, properly documented car matters on the US side.

On the way back, you have two options in the booker:

  • Meet and greet. The chauffeur waits on the arrivals level with a name sign, helps at the baggage belt and walks you to the car. This is the one to choose with children, a lot of luggage, or an elderly parent.
  • Curbside. The chauffeur waits nearby - the airport runs a free cell phone lot for drivers meeting arriving passengers - and comes to the arrivals curb when you call or message to say you have your bags.

Either way, the chauffeur's mobile number is on your confirmation and the plate is texted before pickup.

The return pickup when you land at BUF

The return is a separate one-way booking from BUF to your Toronto address, made at the same time as the outbound. Put the flight number in the booker and the flight is tracked from departure, so a delayed flight from Orlando moves the pickup without a phone call. A flight landing at BUF from a US city is a domestic arrival: there is no customs hall at the airport, you walk from the gate to the belt, and the free waiting time is 30 minutes from landing. After that, waiting is charged as set out at booking.

The customs stop happens northbound, at the bridge, with the Canada Border Services Agency. Keep the passports and any receipts together in a hand bag rather than in the trunk, declare what you bought, and remember that the personal exemption depends on how long you were away - the CBSA publishes both the rules and its own wait times. Evening arrivals on a Sunday meet the busiest northbound queues of the week at Lewiston; the chauffeur will look at the Peace Bridge before committing.

Which car for a Buffalo airport run

  • Executive Sedan - one to three passengers with normal luggage; the most economical class.
  • Business SUV (Yukon or Suburban) - a family of four to six, golf bags, ski bags, or the six months of luggage a snowbird takes south in November. The black SUV page has the detail.
  • First Class SUV (Escalade) - the same space, a quieter and more luxurious cabin.
  • Mercedes E- or S-Class - for an executive who wants to work for two hours.
  • Executive Sprinter - eight to twelve flying together, a wedding party heading south, a team to a tournament. The group Sprinter page explains why one vehicle beats three.

Every class is on the fleet page, with winter tyres from November - which matters on the QEW at Grimsby in January.

What a Toronto to Buffalo airport car costs

A one-way transfer to or from BUF is a flat fare by address and class, quoted in the engine before you confirm, with the car's return position built in. For a round trip where the chauffeur waits - you are seeing someone off and bringing someone else back, or a same-day meeting near the airport - the hourly rate is the number, and about six hours covers the drive both ways and the border. At the engine quotes of 8 October 2026, in Canadian dollars, before 13% HST and gratuity:

ClassHourly rateAbout 6 hours, round trip with waiting
Executive Sedan$135-$160$810-$960
Business SUV$175-$210$1,050-$1,260
First Class SUV (Escalade)$225-$270$1,350-$1,620
Mercedes E/S-Class$350-$420$2,100-$2,520
Executive Sprinter (12)$475-$570$2,850-$3,420
Jet Sprinter (7)$650-$780$3,900-$4,680

The exact rate for your date shows in the booker before you confirm. Bridge and US tolls, where they apply, and the 407 only if you choose that route, are shown at booking. The rates page explains how hourly bookings work, and the city-to-city page explains when a flat fare beats hourly.

Plan backwards, leave early. The drive to BUF is a little over two hours; the border is the only unknown. Start from your departure time, subtract the airline's check-in, a border allowance and the drive, and then leave a little earlier than that. A chauffeur waiting at the terminal for you is a quiet morning; a chauffeur watching the clock at the bridge is not.

FAQ

Buffalo Niagara airport (BUF): questions answered

How far is Buffalo airport from Toronto?

Buffalo Niagara International is about 171 km (106 miles) from Union Station by the QEW, Highway 405 and the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, or 176 km by the Peace Bridge. Allow about 2 hours 15 minutes of driving off-peak, plus the border - typically 30 minutes on a weekday morning and 60 to 90 minutes on a weekend or holiday.

How early should I leave Toronto for a flight from Buffalo?

Work backwards from departure: your airline's check-in time for a domestic US flight, a border allowance of 30 to 90 minutes depending on the day, then 2 hours 15 of driving from downtown. For a 10:30 am Saturday flight that means leaving downtown around 5:15 to 5:30 am. The desk will suggest a pickup time when you book.

Do I need a passport to fly from Buffalo airport?

To cross by land, Canadian citizens can use a passport or a NEXUS card, according to CBP. Your airline may have its own rules for children and for ID at the gate, so most families bring every passport. Permanent residents and other nationals need what their nationality requires for US entry.

How much is a car service from Toronto to Buffalo airport?

A one-way is a flat fare by address and class, quoted in the engine. A round trip with the chauffeur waiting is about six hours: from $810-$960 in an Executive Sedan, $1,050-$1,260 in a Business SUV or $2,850-$3,420 in a Sprinter, CAD, engine quotes of 8 October 2026, before HST and gratuity.

Where will the chauffeur meet me when I land at Buffalo?

With meet and greet, on the arrivals level with a name sign, then at the baggage belt. Without it, the chauffeur waits nearby and comes to the arrivals curb when you call to say you have your bags. The chauffeur's number is on your confirmation.

Is there customs at Buffalo airport when I fly back?

Not for a flight from a US city - it is a domestic arrival. You clear Canadian customs at the bridge on the way home, with the CBSA. Keep passports and receipts handy rather than in the trunk.

Can I take a limo from Toronto to Buffalo airport with a big group?

Yes. An Executive Sprinter seats twelve with a rear luggage bay and is the cheapest chauffeured option per seat for seven or more; for a smaller group with lots of bags, a Business SUV or Escalade. Every passenger's passport goes to the officer at once.

Is it cheaper to fly from Buffalo than from Pearson?

Often, for leisure fares to US destinations - the airport itself publishes a sample family trip to Orlando about 34% cheaper. Add the transfer and the border before deciding: for one traveller on a short business trip, Pearson's preclearance usually wins.
