Two airports that are not Pearson

Toronto travellers increasingly fly from somewhere other than Pearson. Some take a Porter flight out of John C. Munro Hamilton International (YHM) on the escarpment above Hamilton; many more drive across the border to Buffalo Niagara International (BUF) for a cheaper fare into the United States. Both need a car at each end, and both are long enough that a chauffeured drive is the sensible way to do it: a Hamilton airport limo from a Toronto address is about 84 km, and a Toronto to Buffalo airport car service run is about 171 km with a border crossing in the middle.

This page covers John C. Munro Hamilton airport transportation and the BUF airport transfer from Toronto: distances and drive times, the route, the documents for the border, why people fly from Buffalo and when they should not, and how the fare is worked out. For the Buffalo day out - the Bills, the Sabres, the outlets - see the Buffalo day-trip page; for the crossing itself in detail, the cross-border page.

Hamilton airport limo: the drive to John C. Munro

John C. Munro Hamilton International sits south of the city, past the escarpment, off Highway 6. From Union Station in downtown Toronto it is about 84 km and typically 75 minutes off-peak, by the Gardiner and the QEW to Highway 403, the Lincoln Alexander Parkway and Highway 6 south. From Pearson it is about 77 km and a similar time by the 427 and the QEW or the 403. Rush hour on the QEW through Oakville and Burlington adds 20 to 40 minutes in either direction, and the dispatcher plans the pickup around the road, not the clock.

Who flies from Hamilton? When we checked the airport's own site on 8 October 2026, it listed Porter flights to destinations including Halifax, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Vancouver and Montreal, and Air Canada service to Toronto Pearson. Schedules change by season, so check your airline. For travellers living in Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville or Milton, YHM can be the closer airport; for someone downtown, it is the airport you use when the fare or the schedule beats Pearson by enough to cover the longer drive.

John C. Munro Hamilton airport transportation, the practical points

YHM is a small terminal: the walk from the door to check-in is short and the curb is calm compared with Pearson. Plan to be dropped off with the time your airline recommends before departure. On arrival, the flight is tracked in the same way as at Pearson, and meet and greet in the arrivals area is the same option in the booker. Early flights are the main reason to book a car: a 6 am Porter departure means leaving downtown Toronto around 3:45 am, an hour when there is no practical transit and a taxi is a gamble.

Buffalo airport limo from Toronto

Buffalo Niagara International is about 171 km from Union Station by the QEW, Highway 405 and the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, or about 176 km by the QEW to Fort Erie and the Peace Bridge. Either way, it is typically 2 hours 10 to 2 hours 20 minutes of driving off-peak, plus whatever the border takes - fifteen minutes on a quiet weekday morning, an hour or more on a holiday weekend. From Pearson it is about 164 km. The chauffeur checks the CBSA and CBP wait-time boards before choosing the bridge, and for a flight with no slack the desk will suggest leaving earlier than you think.

A Toronto to Buffalo airport car service run is about 171 km from downtown - roughly 2 hours 10 minutes of driving plus the border wait - by the QEW and the Lewiston-Queenston or Peace Bridge. A Hamilton airport limo is about 84 km and 75 minutes off-peak. Every passenger crossing to Buffalo needs a passport, NEXUS card or other accepted document, and fares are quoted in the booker before you confirm.

Why fly from Buffalo - and when not to

Buffalo's airport markets itself directly to Canadians. Its own page for Canadian travellers, which we read on 8 October 2026, says the airport offers up to 100 nonstop flights a day to 30 destinations, that there is no additional customs and immigration stop at the airport for US destinations, and that parking is cheap; it gives a sample family fare to Orlando substantially lower than the same trip from Pearson. Those are the airport's figures, not ours, but the logic is real: a domestic US flight from BUF can cost far less than a transborder flight from Toronto, and a family of four multiplies the saving by four.

Now the honest part. Pearson has US preclearance, so a passenger flying from Toronto clears US customs before boarding and lands in the US as a domestic arrival. Flying from Buffalo, the border is crossed in the car instead. Add a 4.5-hour round trip for the chauffeur, the border wait each way and the cost of the transfer, and the saving shrinks. For one traveller on a cheap fare to New York, Pearson or Billy Bishop usually wins. For a family on a Florida holiday, a group of golfers or a traveller going somewhere Pearson does not serve directly, Buffalo often does. Do the arithmetic with the fare difference and the transfer quote side by side - the booker shows the transfer price before you commit.

Border documents

The rules belong to the governments, and their own pages are the authority. US Customs and Border Protection's Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative page lists the documents Canadian citizens may present entering the US by land: a valid passport or a trusted traveller card such as NEXUS (Ontario stopped issuing enhanced driver's licences in 2019, so for Torontonians it is a passport or NEXUS). It also says US and Canadian citizen children under 16 entering by land need only a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship - but you are flying onward, so check what your airline requires of a child, and most families simply bring every passport. Permanent residents of Canada and other nationals need their passport and whatever their nationality requires for US entry; check CBP before the day, not at the booth.

A child travelling with one parent should carry a consent letter from the other parent; the Government of Canada publishes a recommended consent letter. NEXUS lanes can be used only if every person in the car holds a NEXUS card.

Coming home, everyone re-enters Canada at the same bridges and answers the CBSA's questions; purchases are declared and the duty-free allowance depends on how long you were away. The chauffeur hands over the passports and says nothing until asked - the officer's questions are for the passengers.

Choosing the bridge

Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, off Highway 405 north of Niagara Falls: the shortest road route from Toronto to BUF and usually the first choice. Peace Bridge, at the end of the QEW in Fort Erie: a few kilometres longer and the alternative when Lewiston is backed up. Rainbow Bridge, in Niagara Falls itself: slower, busy with visitors, and rarely the right choice for a flight. The chauffeur decides on the morning from the live wait times, and the cross-border page has the detail for every crossing.

What a Hamilton or Buffalo airport transfer costs

One-way airport transfers are priced as a flat fare by address and class; the engine quotes it before you confirm, with the car's return built in. As a reference point, the 27 km Union Station to Pearson run was quoted on 8 October 2026 from $140-$170 in an Executive Sedan, from $180-$215 in a Business SUV and from $230-$275 in an Escalade, before 13% HST and gratuity. Hamilton and Buffalo are longer runs and cost more.

For a round trip where the chauffeur waits - dropping someone at YHM and bringing a guest back, or a Buffalo run with a meeting on the way - the hourly rates are the useful number. At the engine rates of 8 October 2026, before HST and gratuity:

ClassHourly rate3 hours (YHM out and back)6 hours (BUF out and back with the border)
Executive Sedan$135-$160$405-$480$810-$960
Business SUV$175-$210$525-$630$1,050-$1,260
First Class SUV (Escalade)$225-$270$675-$810$1,350-$1,620
Executive Sprinter (12)$475-$5705 h minimum: $2,375-$2,850$2,850-$3,420

The exact rate for your date shows in the booker before you confirm. The 407 is used only if you choose that route, shown at booking; bridge and US tolls, where they apply, are shown at booking too. A family of six or a golf trip with clubs is a Business SUV or Escalade; a group of eight to twelve heading to Florida together fits the Executive Sprinter, which on a per-seat basis is the cheapest way to get a group to BUF.

Arriving back at BUF or YHM

The return is booked the same way: a Route booking from the airport to your Toronto address, the flight number in the booker, tracked from departure. Put the arrival terminal details in the notes and the chauffeur will be there when you land; meet and greet in the arrivals area is available at both airports. Coming home from Buffalo, the border is crossed northbound with the CBSA, so keep receipts for anything you bought together and the passports in hand.

Who books these transfers

Hamilton and Burlington residents flying from Pearson or BUF, for whom the Pearson airport limo or a Buffalo run is a similar distance. Families taking the cheaper US fare from Buffalo for a school-holiday trip. Snowbirds leaving for Florida in November with six months of luggage. Business travellers whose company books a Porter flight from Hamilton. Visitors who flew into Buffalo and want to reach a Toronto hotel or Niagara Falls without renting a car and crossing the border on their own. For longer one-way drives, the city-to-city page explains the flat fare against hourly.

Put every passenger's name and nationality in the notes for a Buffalo run so the desk can flag a document problem before the day. Cancellation counts from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours no charge, 72 hours or less 10%, 48 hours or less 50%, 24 hours or less or a no-show 100%. The rates page explains the hourly numbers and the fleet page shows each class.

Leave for Buffalo earlier than the map says. The drive is a little over two hours; the border is the unknown. For a domestic US departure from BUF, add the airline's recommended check-in time and a border allowance of at least an hour on a weekend or holiday. The chauffeur would rather wait for you at the airport than watch the clock at the bridge.
