The Henry Ford museum, from Toronto

The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan, is three attractions on one campus and a fourth a short ride away: the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation, Greenfield Village, the Ford Rouge Factory Tour and a giant-screen theatre. Its address is 20900 Oakwood Boulevard, Dearborn, and from Union Station in Toronto it is 391 km (243 miles) by road - about four and a half to five hours with the border, west on the 401 to Windsor and across to Detroit. From the Ambassador Bridge it is only about 20 km to the museum.

TorontoBlackCarService.net drives the Henry Ford museum trip as a long day or, better, a weekend. The chauffeur handles the 401, picks the crossing from the live wait times, drops you at the entrance and waits. This page covers what is open when - checked on thehenryford.org - the route, the documents, which vehicle to choose and what the trip costs.

The Henry Ford is at 20900 Oakwood Blvd, Dearborn, Michigan - 391 km (243 miles) from downtown Toronto, about four and a half to five hours with the border via the 401 and Windsor. The museum opens daily 9:30 am to 5 pm and Greenfield Village is seasonal. A 12-hour chauffeured day in an Executive Sedan is $1,620-$1,920 (engine quotes 8 October 2026, before 13% HST and gratuity).

What is open, and when

Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation. The museum's published standard hours are 9:30 am to 5 pm daily. It lists closures on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, plus occasional single-day closures, so check the hours page for your date. This is the indoor anchor of the visit and the part that works in any season.

Greenfield Village. The outdoor village is seasonal. For the current season the hours page lists: 11 April to 18 May, Tuesday to Sunday; 19 May to 7 September, daily; 8 to 27 September, Tuesday to Sunday - all 9:30 am to 5 pm; then Friday to Sunday only from 28 September to 29 November, with shorter 3 pm closings until 25 October; and closed from 30 November to 31 December. Special evening events such as Hallowe'en in Greenfield Village run on selected October nights. If the village is the reason for the trip, plan for late spring or summer.

Ford Rouge Factory Tour. Monday to Saturday, 9:30 am to 5 pm, closed Sundays, per the Rouge tour page. The tour includes a walkway over final assembly at the Dearborn Truck Plant, but the museum is clear that the plant does not build vehicles during breaks, shift changes, holidays or weekends, and it lists specific non-production dates. If seeing the line moving matters to you, go on a weekday and check those dates; the other four parts of the five-part tour run regardless. The tour's own arrangements for getting to the plant are set out when you buy tickets - follow them, and the chauffeur will meet you back at the museum.

Giant Screen Experience. Open Wednesday to Sunday, closed Monday and Tuesday.

Tickets for each venue, and combination packages, are sold on the official site; buying ahead saves time at the door.

The route: Toronto to Dearborn via Windsor

From downtown, the 401 west through Milton, Cambridge, London and Chatham to Windsor - about four and a half hours of driving to the river in normal conditions. There are now three ways across:

The Ambassador Bridge, open 24 hours a day per the Ambassador Bridge, and usually the most direct crossing for Dearborn.

The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, downtown to downtown, also listed as open around the clock by the tunnel's operator.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge, which its operator said would open to traffic on 27 July 2026, per the Gordie Howe International Bridge site. It connects the 401 directly to I-75 in Detroit.

The chauffeur picks whichever is moving fastest on the CBP wait-times board that morning. From the Michigan side it is a short drive west to Dearborn. Tolls are shown at booking. A coffee stop near London is standard on the way out; the Windsor day-trip page has ideas if you want to break the drive home with dinner on the Canadian side.

A day, or a weekend

One long day. Leave Toronto at 6:30 am, cross mid-morning, museum from about 11:30 am to 3 pm, back across the river and home by about 9 pm. That is roughly 12 hours on the clock and about three and a half hours on site - enough for the museum or the Rouge tour, not both properly. A 12-hour day is a full day for one chauffeur; anything longer is booked with a second chauffeur on request.

A weekend. Drive down, spend the afternoon in the museum, stay in Dearborn, Detroit or Windsor, and give the second day to Greenfield Village or the Rouge tour before driving home. This is the version we recommend between April and November, because the village alone easily fills a day. The chauffeur stays over on request and the car is at the hotel door in the morning.

Combined with a flight. Dearborn is about 20 minutes from Detroit Metro airport, so a morning at the museum fits before an afternoon flight out of DTW - our Detroit airport page covers the terminals.

What the Henry Ford trip costs

Our hourly rates multiplied out; engine quotes from 8 October 2026 in Canadian dollars, before 13% HST and gratuity. Tolls are added at booking, and the exact rate shows in the booker before you confirm.

On a weekend, the chauffeur's overnight arrangement is added and shown on the confirmation. Per person, the Sprinter is the economical choice for a school group, a car club or a family reunion. The rates page explains minimums and overtime, and the full-day chauffeur page covers long single-day bookings in general.

What is on now

Beyond the permanent collection - cars, locomotives, aircraft and the objects of everyday American invention - the museum runs changing exhibitions. Its listings for autumn 2026 include Handmade: The Crafting of America (21 March 2026 to 18 January 2027), Celebrate Indigenous History (9 October to 30 November 2026) and Artemis Adventure with LEGO Bricks (18 October 2026 to 3 January 2027), the last a natural pick for families with younger children. Exhibitions change, so check the museum's calendar when you choose your date.

Who books a Henry Ford trip

Car enthusiasts and clubs. The museum's automotive collection is the reason many people make the drive. A club of ten in a Sprinter shares the cost and the conversation.

Families and grandparents. Greenfield Village in summer works for every age, and the car means nobody has to drive nine hours in a day. An SUV with child seats ($25 each in the booker) takes the family and the stroller.

Engineering and design students. A school or university group on a study visit to the museum and the Rouge tour. The Sprinter seats twelve; confirm every student's border document in advance.

Business visitors to Dearborn. Clients with meetings in the area who want an afternoon at the museum before the drive home. A sedan or S-Class by the hour, or on a corporate account.

Season by season

Spring (April to mid-May). Greenfield Village reopens, closed Mondays; the museum and the Rouge tour keep their normal schedules. The 401 is clear and the crossings are usually quieter than in summer.

Summer (mid-May to early September). Everything is open and the village runs daily. This is the best time for a weekend that covers all of it - and the busiest time at the crossings, so leave early.

Autumn (September to November). The village moves to weekends from late September, with Hallowe'en evenings in October, and the autumn exhibitions are on. A Friday-Saturday trip covers the factory and the village.

Winter (December to March). The village is closed, but the museum is warm and open, and it pairs well with a game or a show in Detroit. Every vehicle runs winter tyres from November, and the dispatcher watches the 401 between London and Windsor.

Coming home across the river

Back at the Windsor crossing, the CBSA officer asks what you are bringing into Canada. Personal exemptions depend on how long you were away, as set out by the CBSA; after a same-day visit the allowance is far smaller than after 48 hours. Declare honestly and keep receipts together.

Which vehicle

An Executive Sedan for one to three. A Business SUV or Escalade for a family - and for the 401 in winter, when the museum is the warm, indoor reason to go. A Mercedes E or S-Class ($350-$420 an hour) for a quiet, comfortable long day for two. An Executive Sprinter for a car club, a class or an engineering team on a study trip, with twelve seats and a luggage bay. A wheelchair-accessible vehicle is available on request - arrange it with the desk by phone, ideally 48 hours ahead. The fleet page shows the vehicles.

How the chauffeur's day works

The chauffeur drops you at the museum entrance and parks nearby - you do not need to agree a pickup time in advance. Text when you are about twenty minutes from leaving and the car is at the door when you walk out. On a long day the chauffeur takes the required breaks while you are inside, so the drive home starts fresh. If the plan changes - the Rouge tour runs late, or the family wants an extra hour in the village - tell the chauffeur; on an hourly booking the extra time simply runs at the same rate to the next full hour.

Documents for the border

Canadian citizens entering the US by land can use a valid passport or a NEXUS card, per US Customs and Border Protection. Permanent residents need their passport and PR card. Children under 16 crossing by land need proof of citizenship; for school groups the rules differ, so check with CBP before the trip. A child travelling with one parent should carry a consent letter from the other, and Global Affairs Canada has a template. The NEXUS lane is only for cars where every passenger holds NEXUS. Coming home, the CBSA asks what you bought; keep museum-shop receipts handy.

More trips from the USA hub

Detroit itself - games, the riverfront, a business day - is on the Detroit day-trip page. Cleveland's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is the music-lover's equivalent of this trip. The USA hub lists every destination, the cross-border service page covers the crossing in general, and the city-to-city page explains flat fares for one-way drives. For hotels in Dearborn or Detroit, our travel desk with BookingWorldwide.net can book them.

How to book

Book direct in the reservation engine on this page - By the hour, with the date, the start address and the hours, and "The Henry Ford" in the notes - or call (833) 931-6688, 24/7, or message us on WhatsApp. For a weekend, tell the desk the hotel and the second day's plan. Please book with us directly rather than through a marketplace. Child and toddler seats are $25 each in the booker.

Cancellation. More than 72 hours before pickup, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show, 100%.

Weekday for the factory, weekend for the village. The Rouge tour is closed on Sundays and the truck plant does not build on weekends, while Greenfield Village in spring and autumn is open mainly on weekends. If you want both, a Friday-Saturday weekend - Rouge tour on Friday, village on Saturday - gets the most out of the drive.

3-hour minimum

Sedans and SUVs book from three hours; Sprinters and coaches from five. After the minimum, time is billed by the hour.
