Crossing the border in a chauffeured car
Toronto is ninety minutes from the United States at the Peace Bridge and four hours at the Ambassador Bridge, and a chauffeured car is the simplest way across: no rental-car paperwork, no wondering which lane, no parking at the far end, and a chauffeur who has crossed a hundred times and knows which booth is moving. Cross-border service covers Buffalo and its airport, Niagara Falls on the New York side, Rochester, Syracuse, Erie, Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and one-way drives to New York City, Boston and Chicago, in a sedan, an S-Class, an SUV or a Sprinter, at a flat fare or by the hour.
The crossing itself takes fifteen minutes on a quiet Tuesday and ninety on a summer Sunday; the chauffeur reads the CBSA and CBP wait-time boards and chooses the bridge accordingly. The Buffalo and Detroit pages have each destination's detail; this page is the crossing, the documents and the pricing.

The crossings
The Peace Bridge at Fort Erie-Buffalo, at the end of the QEW: the main crossing for Buffalo, Buffalo airport, Rochester and the I-90 east. The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge north of Niagara Falls, off the 405: the alternative when the Peace Bridge is backed up, and the crossing for Niagara Falls NY and Lewiston. The Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls itself: the tourist crossing, walkable, and the one for a day that includes both sides of the Falls. The Whirlpool Bridge: NEXUS only. The Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel at Windsor: the crossings for Detroit, and the Gordie Howe International Bridge, opened in 2025, is the third. The Blue Water Bridge at Sarnia-Port Huron for Michigan's north and Chicago. The chauffeur chooses by the wait boards and the destination.
Documents
Every passenger needs a valid passport or a NEXUS card; Canadian permanent residents need their passport and PR card; foreign nationals need whatever their nationality requires for US entry, including an ESTA for visa-waiver countries, arranged before the day. Children need their own passport, and a child travelling with one parent should carry a consent letter from the other - CBP and Global Affairs Canada both recommend it. The chauffeur carries the vehicle's registration, the commercial insurance and the operator's documents, and is used to the questions. NEXUS holders can use the NEXUS lane only if every passenger in the car holds a card; a mixed car uses the regular lane.
What customs looks like in a limousine
The car pulls to the booth; the chauffeur hands over every passport; the officer asks where you are going, for how long, what you are bringing, and sometimes to see the trunk. A chauffeured car with a commercial plate is routine to the officers at every crossing and gets no special attention, good or bad. Purchases on the way home are declared honestly and the duty-free allowances - which depend on how long you were away - are the passenger's responsibility; the chauffeur will remind you of the 48-hour rule that makes the difference. Alcohol and tobacco limits are the ones people get wrong.
Cross-border car service from Toronto is a chauffeured drive into the United States - Buffalo, Niagara Falls NY, Rochester, Detroit and beyond - at a flat fare or by the hour, with a chauffeur who chooses the bridge from the live wait boards and handles the customs stop. Every passenger needs a passport or NEXUS card; children need their own passport and, with one parent, a consent letter.
The trips people book
Buffalo airport. Flights from Buffalo Niagara International are often far cheaper than from Pearson for US destinations, and a flat-fare drive from Toronto to BUF - two hours with the crossing - is the standard way Torontonians use them. Tracked on the return, with the crossing back into Canada at the Peace Bridge. Bills and Sabres. Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park and the KeyBank Center downtown; an hourly day or evening with the car waiting, and the sports page covers the venue. Shopping. The Walden Galleria, the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls, Target and Trader Joe's - an hourly day with the boot filling and the duty-free arithmetic on the way home. Niagara Falls, both sides. The Canadian Falls in the morning, the Rainbow Bridge on foot or in the car, the American Falls and Goat Island in the afternoon, home; the Niagara Falls page plans it. Detroit. The auto show, a Lions or Red Wings game, a business day in the Renaissance Center, a flight from DTW; four hours each way and usually an overnight. Rochester, Cleveland, Pittsburgh. Business days and university visits, one way or overnight. New York, Boston, Chicago. One-way flat fares for the traveller who will not fly or has too much to carry; eight to ten hours; a relief chauffeur or an overnight for the return.
Pricing
A one-way to a US destination is a flat fare by route and class with the return position and the crossing built in; a same-day out-and-back with stops is an hourly booking with the crossing time in the block. Tolls on the bridges and the US interstates are shown at booking and paid separately; HST applies to the fare. Waiting at the border is part of the drive on a flat fare and part of the clock on an hourly booking; the chauffeur's bridge choice keeps it short. The city-to-city page explains the flat-fare-versus-hourly rule and the rates page the hourly number.
The car
The Executive Sedan or S-Class for a Buffalo airport run or a business day. The Luxury SUV for a shopping day, a family, a game with friends, and the winter drive on the QEW and the I-90. The Executive Sprinter for a group to the Bills, a team to Detroit, or a family reunion to Rochester - twelve passports handed over at once. Every vehicle is commercially insured for US operation. The fleet page has the detail.
Chauffeurs who cross
Cross-border drives are assigned to chauffeurs with a clean crossing history who hold the documents US officers expect of a commercial driver and who know the bridges' rhythms: the Peace Bridge's truck lanes, the Lewiston Bridge's Sunday-evening return queue, the Ambassador's construction detours, the Rainbow Bridge's tourist crawl in July. They also know that a customs officer's question is answered by the passenger, not the chauffeur, and stay quiet until asked.
Coming home
The return crossing into Canada is at the same bridges with the CBSA; purchases declared, the allowance depending on the length of the trip, and the ArriveCAN advance declaration optional but faster at the Peace Bridge. The chauffeur handles the car's documents and the passenger handles the declaration; the duty-free rules are printed on the confirmation for a shopping day.
Cross-border on account
Companies with US customers, plants in Michigan or Ohio, or staff who fly from Buffalo book cross-border drives on the corporate account with the fares on file. A team to a Detroit plant in a Sprinter, a principal to a Buffalo meeting in the S-Class, a weekly Buffalo-airport run for a commuter: each is a line on the monthly invoice.
Crossings, in a table
| Crossing | For | From Toronto | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peace Bridge (Fort Erie-Buffalo) | Buffalo, BUF, Rochester, I-90 east | 1 h 40 to the bridge | Main crossing; truck traffic |
| Lewiston-Queenston | Niagara Falls NY, Lewiston | 1 h 30 | Alternative when Peace Bridge is backed up |
| Rainbow Bridge | Niagara Falls both sides | 1 h 45 | Tourist crossing, slow in summer |
| Ambassador Bridge / Tunnel | Detroit | 4 h to Windsor | Tunnel for downtown Detroit |
| Gordie Howe Bridge | Detroit, I-75 | 4 h | Opened 2025 |
| Blue Water Bridge (Sarnia) | Michigan north, Chicago | 3 h to Sarnia | Quieter than Windsor |
Booking a cross-border drive
Choose Route for a one-way or By the hour for a day, the class, the addresses, the date and time; put every passenger's name and nationality in the notes so the desk can flag any document issue; add the flight number for a Buffalo or Detroit airport run. Book a day ahead; the desk confirms the chauffeur and the crossing plan. On the day, have the passports in hand at the bridge.
A Buffalo airport run, timed
4:30 am, the chauffeur at a Leslieville door, Executive Sedan, two passengers, two bags. 4:45 the Gardiner and the QEW, empty. 5:55 the Peace Bridge, twelve minutes at the booth. 6:20 the I-190 to Buffalo Niagara International, the departures curb. A 7:45 flight to Florida at a fare a third of Pearson's. The return, ten days later, tracked from Fort Lauderdale, the chauffeur at BUF's arrivals curb, the Peace Bridge into Canada with the duty-free declared, home by dinner. Two flat fares; nothing else on the invoice but the bridge tolls and HST.
What the officer may ask
Where you live, where you are going, how long you will stay, whether you are carrying more than ten thousand dollars, food, alcohol, tobacco, firearms or cannabis - the last is illegal to carry across in either direction regardless of provincial or state law, and CBSA and CBP say so plainly. Answer each question and no more. The chauffeur has heard them all and will not react to any of them.
Insurance and the vehicle across the border
Every vehicle carries commercial passenger insurance valid in the United States, and the chauffeur carries the proof the officers occasionally ask for. The car is not a rental and there is no cross-border rental restriction to worry about; it is the operator's own vehicle on its own plate, which is one more reason the crossing is uneventful. The desk can issue a certificate of insurance to a US venue or client on request.

The passenger answers the officer. At every crossing the chauffeur hands over the documents and then says nothing; the officer's questions - where, how long, what are you bringing - are for the passenger. Answer plainly and briefly. It is the whole of the etiquette, and it is why crossings in a chauffeured car are uneventful.
Cross-border to the USA: questions answered
What documents do I need to cross into the US by car?
A valid passport or NEXUS card for every passenger; a PR card with the passport for permanent residents; an ESTA or visa for foreign nationals as their nationality requires. Children need their own passport and, travelling with one parent, a consent letter from the other.
Which bridge will the chauffeur use?
The one the live wait boards favour: the Peace Bridge for Buffalo and the I-90, the Lewiston-Queenston as the alternative, the Rainbow Bridge for a day at the Falls, the Ambassador, the tunnel or the Gordie Howe for Detroit.
How long does the crossing take?
Fifteen minutes on a quiet weekday, up to ninety on a summer Sunday. On a flat fare the crossing is part of the drive; on an hourly booking it is part of the clock. The chauffeur's bridge choice keeps it short.
Can we use the NEXUS lane?
Only if every passenger in the car holds a NEXUS card. A mixed car uses the regular lane.
Is a drive to Buffalo airport cheaper than flying from Pearson?
Often the flight from BUF is far cheaper for US destinations, and a flat-fare drive of about two hours with the crossing is how many Torontonians use it. The return is tracked and crosses back at the Peace Bridge.
Do you go to New York, Boston or Chicago?
Yes, as one-way flat fares of eight to ten hours with a relief chauffeur or an overnight for the return, for the traveller who will not fly or has too much to carry.
Are tolls included?
Bridge and US interstate tolls are shown at booking and paid separately; HST applies to the fare. The 407 in Ontario is used only if you choose it.
What about duty-free on the way home?
Purchases are declared to the CBSA on return; the allowance depends on how long you were away, with the 48-hour threshold making the difference. The rules are printed on the confirmation for a shopping day and the chauffeur will remind you.
Four rules. No small print.
The hourly minimums are the ones printed in our terms; the rate for each class is quoted live by the reservation engine for your date. The rates page explains what moves it.

- 5hExecutive Sprinter, Stretch SUV, Coach, Limo/Party Bus
3-hour minimum
Sedans and SUVs book from three hours; Sprinters and coaches from five. After the minimum, time is billed by the hour.
The clock runs from your door
Hourly time starts at the pickup address, not at our garage. Garage travel, where it applies, is shown at booking in 30-minute blocks - never a surprise on the invoice.
Overtime rounds to the hour
Run past the reserved block and the extra time is billed to the next full hour at the same rate, with tax and gratuity as on the original booking.
Waiting is included
Hourly means the car waits. The meeting that runs long, the dinner that runs late, the second stop you did not plan - the chauffeur is outside, the clock simply continues.

Vetted in Toronto. Vetted at the far end.

LimousineWorldwide.Directory
Our listing in the worldwide directory is how a Toronto client who keeps a chauffeur by the hour here can do the same in Vancouver, London or Dubai through a vetted operator. Every Canadian city and every country on this site is served through that network.

LimousineAssociation.International
Membership commits us to the association's standards on licensing, commercial insurance, vehicle inspection and chauffeur conduct - the things a passenger cannot check from the back seat during a ten-hour day.

HotelsWorldwide.Directory
Our membership of the hotels directory links the car to the bed: concierges and hotel teams across the directory find a vetted Toronto chauffeur in one place, and our clients find the hotel at the far end of the drive - Yorkville, the airport strip, Niagara-on-the-Lake or Muskoka.

VacationsWorldwide.Directory
Membership of the vacations directory puts our day trips - Niagara, the wineries, Muskoka, Blue Mountain, Prince Edward County - in front of travellers planning the whole holiday, with the tours, resorts and activities around them listed alongside.
