Detroit, across the river

Detroit is the far end of the 401: three hundred and seventy kilometres west of Toronto to Windsor, then the Ambassador Bridge, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel or, since 2025, the Gordie Howe International Bridge across the Detroit River into the city. Four hours with the crossing off-peak, and the reasons Toronto goes are the auto industry's - the North American International Auto Show, the suppliers' meetings in Dearborn and Auburn Hills, the Big Three's headquarters - and the sports fan's: the Lions at Ford Field, the Red Wings and the Pistons at Little Caesars Arena, the Tigers at Comerica Park, all downtown within a block of each other. A Toronto-to-Detroit booking is a one-way flat fare fixed by route and class or an overnight with the chauffeur staying; the cross-border page covers the documents and the customs process, the Windsor page the Canadian side of the river, and the city-to-city page when a flat fare beats an overnight.

The drive and the crossings

The 401 west through Kitchener, London and Chatham to Windsor's east end - three hours forty off-peak, the flattest and emptiest stretch of the 401 past London - then one of three crossings. The Ambassador Bridge from Huron Church Road, the truck route and the busiest commercial crossing in North America, with a queue that can be an hour when the trucks back up. The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel from downtown Windsor to downtown Detroit under the river, ten minutes on a good day and the crossing for Ford Field, the arena, the Renaissance Center and the downtown hotels. The Gordie Howe International Bridge from the Sandwich end of Windsor to the I-75, opened in 2025, the new crossing for Dearborn, Auburn Hills and the airport. The chauffeur reads the CBSA and CBP wait boards at Chatham and chooses. Tolls at all three, shown at booking. Every passenger needs a passport or NEXUS; the cross-border page has the rest.

The drive versus the flight

Pearson to DTW is an hour and ten minutes in the air and three and a half hours door to door with the airports; the chauffeured drive is four hours door to door with the passenger working. For one traveller the flight wins by a little; for two or three with a working day and luggage the drive is close and better; for a team of six to twelve to a supplier's plant in a Sprinter the drive is cheaper and the meeting is held on the 401. Bad weather, which the 401 west of London has in January, tips it: a flight cancels and a car slows.

The auto industry

Toronto's automotive and parts companies, the banks that finance them, the law firms that paper the deals and the consultants who advise them send people to Detroit, Dearborn, Auburn Hills and Warren every week: the Big Three headquarters, the suppliers along the I-75 and the I-696, the Detroit Auto Show (the NAIAS, in January at Huntington Place), the SAE World Congress in April, and the industry's conferences. A Toronto-to-Dearborn one-way on Monday, a local chauffeur for the Tuesday, home Tuesday night or a flight from DTW, on the corporate account; the roadshow page plans a multi-stop supplier day, and the Sprinter page prices the team's van.

A chauffeured Toronto-to-Detroit drive is 370 km west on the 401 to Windsor and across the Ambassador Bridge, the tunnel or the Gordie Howe bridge - about four hours with the crossing - booked as a one-way flat fare or an overnight with the chauffeur staying, for the auto show, the industry's meetings in Dearborn and Auburn Hills, Lions, Red Wings and Pistons games downtown, or a DTW airport transfer. Passports for everyone; the chauffeur chooses the crossing from the wait boards.

The games

Ford Field, Little Caesars Arena and Comerica Park sit within three blocks of each other downtown, ten minutes from the tunnel: a Lions Sunday is a twelve-hour hourly day from Toronto - leave at 7 for a 1 pm kickoff, the tunnel, the pre-paid lot, the game, the Sprinter at the lot exit when the fourth quarter ends, home by 8 - and a Red Wings or Pistons night is an overnight, because the 401 at midnight after a game is not the plan. The Thanksgiving Lions game is the annual booking. The sports page has the venue-exit rules; the Sprinter for twelve is the vehicle.

DTW

Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus is a Delta hub with direct flights across the US and to Europe and Asia at fares that sometimes beat Pearson's for a Toronto traveller in the west of the GTA; a one-way flat fare from Toronto or London to DTW via the Gordie Howe bridge and the I-94, timed to the airline's cut-off and the crossing, is on the engine, and the return is tracked with the crossing back into Canada.

Detroit itself

The Renaissance Center on the river and the Detroit Institute of Arts (the Rivera murals), the Motown Museum, the Henry Ford in Dearborn, Belle Isle, Eastern Market on a Saturday, the Fox Theatre, the riverwalk, and Corktown and Midtown's restaurants: a visitor's day of eight hours, or the afternoon before a game, with the chauffeur waiting. The hotels - the Book Cadillac, the Shinola, the Detroit Foundation Hotel, the Siren, the MGM Grand - are downtown within minutes of the tunnel.

Windsor, on the way

The Canadian side of the river is Windsor: Caesars Windsor for the casino and its concerts, the riverfront with the Detroit skyline across the water, Walkerville and the Hiram Walker distillery, and the University of Windsor. A Detroit overnight often includes a Windsor evening, and a Windsor trip is on its own page.

The overnight

An hourly booking with the chauffeur staying - the per-diem and the hotel on the confirmation - gives the same chauffeur and car at the Detroit hotel in the morning; for a supplier tour across Dearborn and Auburn Hills it is the better service, and the desk plans it to Ontario's hours-of-service rules. For a single meeting the two flat fares plus a local chauffeur are cheaper. The multi-day page covers the week-long version.

The car

The Mercedes S-Class for one to three who will work for four hours. The Executive Sedan for the same drive at the lower rate. The Luxury SUV for a family, luggage and the 401 west of London in winter. The Executive Sprinter for a team to a plant or twelve to Ford Field. Every vehicle is commercially insured for US operation and carries winter tyres from November. The fleet page has capacities.

Booking Detroit

Choose Route, the class, the Toronto address and the Detroit or Dearborn address, the date and time; put every passenger's name and nationality in the notes; confirm the fare. For a game, By the hour, twelve hours; for an overnight or a supplier week, call the desk. Book the auto show in December and the Thanksgiving Lions game in October; winter drives with a weather eye on the 401 at London.

Detroit's addresses, for the drop

Ford Field, 2000 Brush Street; Little Caesars Arena, 2645 Woodward Avenue; Comerica Park, 2100 Woodward; the Renaissance Center on Jefferson at the river; Huntington Place (the auto show), 1 Washington Boulevard; the Detroit Institute of Arts, 5200 Woodward; the Henry Ford, 20900 Oakwood Boulevard, Dearborn; the Motown Museum, 2648 West Grand Boulevard; Detroit Metropolitan Airport, Romulus, via the I-94; the Big Three's headquarters in Dearborn (Ford), the Renaissance Center (GM) and Auburn Hills (Stellantis). The chauffeur has crossed to all of them, knows which parking structure Ford Field's pre-paid pass opens, and takes the tunnel or the bridge accordingly.

The Windsor evening, on the way home

A Detroit day that ends with dinner in Windsor's Walkerville or a show at Caesars Windsor makes the four-hour drive home a two-hour drive after a night at the Caesars hotel, and it is how most Toronto sports fans do a Red Wings game: the tunnel back into Canada at 10:30, the casino's valet, the hotel, and the 401 in the morning. The Windsor page has the town.

Duty-free and the auto industry's samples

The way home crosses the CBSA with purchases declared and, for the industry traveller, sometimes with samples, parts or prototypes that need commercial paperwork; the chauffeur carries the vehicle's documents and the traveller carries the company's, and the desk will remind an account client to bring the customs broker's paperwork when a booking's notes mention it.

Booking, in one line

Route to Detroit or Dearborn with every passenger's nationality in the notes, or By the hour for a game day; December for the auto show, October for the Thanksgiving Lions game, and a call to the desk for an overnight or a supplier week.

The tunnel or the bridge. Downtown to downtown - the arena, Ford Field, the hotels - is the tunnel. Dearborn, Auburn Hills, DTW and the I-75 are the Gordie Howe bridge. The Ambassador is for when the boards say so. The chauffeur decides at Chatham with the wait times in hand, and it is worth twenty minutes either way.

FAQ

Detroit, MI: questions answered

How long is the drive from Toronto to Detroit?

About four hours with the crossing off-peak - three hours forty on the 401 to Windsor and ten to thirty minutes at the tunnel or a bridge. The 401 west of London is the flattest and emptiest stretch.

Which crossing do you use?

The tunnel for downtown - the arena, Ford Field, the hotels; the Gordie Howe bridge for Dearborn, Auburn Hills, DTW and the I-75; the Ambassador when the wait boards say so. The chauffeur decides at Chatham with the CBSA and CBP times in hand.

Is it a flat fare or an overnight?

A one-way flat fare by route and class with the car's return built in, or an overnight with the chauffeur staying - the better service for a multi-stop supplier tour, and the desk says which is cheaper. A game is a twelve-hour hourly day or an overnight.

Do you go to the Detroit Auto Show?

Yes - the NAIAS at Huntington Place in January, booked in December; a Sprinter for a company's team or an S-Class for a principal, with a local chauffeur for the day.

Can you take a group to a Lions game?

Yes - the Sprinter for up to twelve as a twelve-hour day, a 7 am departure for a 1 pm kickoff, the tunnel, the pre-paid lot, and the vehicle at the lot exit as the game ends. The Thanksgiving game is the annual booking.

Do you do DTW airport transfers?

Yes - a one-way flat fare from Toronto or London to Detroit Metropolitan Airport via the Gordie Howe bridge and the I-94, timed to the cut-off and the crossing; the return is tracked and crosses back into Canada.

Is it better to fly?

The flight is an hour and ten and about three and a half hours door to door; the drive is four hours door to door with the passenger working. Close for two or three; cheaper by car for a team in a Sprinter; and in a January storm the car is the one that moves.

What documents do we need?

A valid passport or NEXUS card for every passenger, a child's own passport, and a consent letter for a child with one parent. The cross-border page has the customs process and the duty-free rules for the way home.

3-hour minimum

Sedans and SUVs book from three hours; Sprinters and coaches from five. After the minimum, time is billed by the hour.

Hourly time starts at the pickup address, not at our garage. Garage travel, where it applies, is shown at booking in 30-minute blocks - never a surprise on the invoice.

Waiting is included

Hourly means the car waits. The meeting that runs long, the dinner that runs late, the second stop you did not plan - the chauffeur is outside, the clock simply continues.
